Yellow Kittens Block Island

Welcome to our first post.

Yellow Kittens
Corn Neck RoadBlock Island, RI 02807401-466-5855
Yellow Kittens has been in business since 1876 and at one point was the only bar on the island. Inside, theres an aged wooden bar, a couple of pool tables, and a ping pong table. Former manager Dan Cahill isn't sure where the bar got it's name, but thinks it has something to do with its early reputation as a brothel. Other characters from Yellow Kittens shady past include rum runners during the prohibition. Since it's located right on the water, they just pulled up and docked their boats, says Cahill. Now, it's where both old-timers and newcomers select from an extensive list of beers and listen to live music on weekends in styles ranging from Ska to rock and roll. In the season, the bar opens at noon and serves pub fare on the deck. Owner Ed McGovern also owns the adjacent Winfields restaurant. --Martha Visser
